Hero Story - Wendy Image

Hero Story 1: Wendy.

“Life is stressful sometimes, life with ADHD symptoms is even more difficult. The first time I heard autism I thought that it meant psychotic. That I should stay away from these people. I never heard any other details about autism until I moved to the UK. I was later diagnosed with ADHD. As soon as I found out, I burst into tears. I was worried my older son also had ADHD, because of his impulsive behaviour. In Chinese culture people would not accept that your child is autistic. Hazel Lou changed my life. She changed my mindset. I have no need to blame myself anymore, but I put focus on my strengths rather than my weaknesses. I do more things like mountain biking, dancing and throwing myself into nature to help me build up a strong mental health. I found a lot of tools that can help me do better at work. Sticky notes, notebooks, allow myself to fidget, allow myself to mimic when I read a book, etc. A diagnosis has helped me to have a better understanding of how my brain works.”

Hero Story 2: Xiaoxia

“When I first heard of autism, I thought it was a bad thing. At the beginning, I didn’t understand some of Evin’s behaviours. A typical Chinese person doesn’t want to tell others that they have a problem child. My son has been hyperactive since he was young. When I picked him up from school, his ten-minute walk would take an hour. I understand more about ADHD and ASD because Hazel has shown us films, books and helped us meet with other families with similar experiences. When I go through the photos, I realised that we have been to more activities and more happier because of Hazel.
